A mere 26 truck hours (with weigh stations and stops) and we're IN New Orleans!!! Tom and Cindy left Friday morning with a 16' rental truck, nearly full with donated furniture, clothing and household goods from all of our great friends and Long Island contractors! We went through New York, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Washington DC, Virginia, Tennessee, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi & Louisiana. None of you will be surprised that it took longer to get through NY (the Cross Bronx strikes again) & NJ than to drive the entire state of Tennessee.
Arrived at 9:30 at Phoenix of New Orleans (PNOLA's) volunteer house- and were met by Rachael, an Americorps volunteer who works with PNOLA. Bobby arrived at 11.
Rachael took us on a tour through the lower Ninth Ward- homes devasted everywhere by Hurricane Katrina and the flooding that followed. Yes, it was 2 years ago this Wednesday.
We will be working at Ms Betty's house this week and will be doing roofing at Emanuel's house if and when the rain holds off....more to come and we will be posting lots of pictures. Stay tuned.
